What to Do Before the Plumber Arrives
The first few minutes matter more than anything we do afterward. These steps limit the damage while our technician is on the way.
- Shut Off the Water: For a single fixture, close the valve under the sink or behind the toilet. For anything else, close the main shut-off valve, usually near the front of the house where the water line enters, or at the meter box by the sidewalk.
- Turn Off the Water Heater: If the heater is leaking or the house has no water, close its cold-water inlet valve and set the gas control to off, or switch off the breaker for an electric unit. A heater that runs dry can be ruined.
- Kill Power to Wet Areas: If water has reached outlets, appliances, or light fixtures, switch off the breaker for that area before you step in.
- Stop Using Drains and Toilets: During a sewer backup, every flush and every load of laundry sends more wastewater into the house.
- Move What You Can: Lift rugs, boxes, and furniture out of the water. Photograph the damage for your insurance claim before you clean up.
- Skip the Chemical Drain Cleaner: Caustic products sit in a blocked pipe and can burn the technician who opens it. Leave the line alone until we arrive.
